Alpine Walking Holidays

Planning note

Build a walking base around the route

Chamonix and Les Houches are distinct bases in the same valley. Compare the start, finish and return journey of each outing.

01

Chamonix: base the trip around a route

Decide which valley walks and mountain outings you want to consider, then compare the hotel with their actual departure points. A Chamonix address does not put every trailhead at the door. Compare town-centre bases around the valley's transport and arrival points.

02

Les Houches: give the valley its own time

Les Houches makes sense as a destination in its own right as well as a valley base. Compare the precise address with the activities you plan rather than treating every Mont Blanc address as interchangeable. Look at a separate valley village and plan journeys to your chosen walk start.

03

Test the arrival before the itinerary

Put the actual arrival point beside the hotel address. Compare the luggage journey, check-in timing and any need to store bags. A beautiful district can still be the wrong base for an early departure.

04

Compare two addresses, not two photographs

Choose one hotel from each base and write down how you would spend an ordinary day from it. Compare the journeys, meals and return in the evening. Keep the room category and booking conditions beside that plan.

Put the questions beside a real stay.
